Türkiye has reached a critical threshold in a security and identity crisis that has lasted for nearly half a century. With the call by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli and the subsequent announcement by the PKK of its decision to disarm, the possibility of an end not only to the armed conflict but also to social tension has emerged on the horizon. What does this development signify? How is society interpreting this process? How are perceptions of the Kurdish issue changing?

This comprehensive report, prepared by the Ankara Institute, is based on field research conducted between 27 June and 5 July 2025 and analyses of the socio-political context of the process. Through interviews with participants from all over Türkiye, it shows how society views the Kurdish issue, the PKK’s disarmament, demands for equal citizenship, and the need for democratisation.

The report was written not only to understand current developments but also to shed light on the constitutional, legal, and political reforms that will be made for Türkiye’s future. It answers questions such as, ‘Will the PKK’s disarmament democratise Türkiye?’, ‘How prepared is society for the resolution process?’, and ‘How will political balances change if the Kurdish issue is resolved?’

This report is not merely a public opinion survey; it is also a document that tests Türkiye’s will to live together, its capacity for democratisation, and its hopes for social peace.
